Stan Zimmerman is a life-long journalist. He’s won awards from the Florida Press Association (2009, 2010 and 2012), the National Press Club (1990), the Society of Professional Journalists (1980) and a medal from the U.S. Naval Institute (1996). The FPA awards were for investigative reporting, in-depth reporting and editorial writing.

Stan’s specialty is covering government and civic affairs. He has written and broadcast in Florida for WSPB-am, WXLT-tv (now Channel 7), WBRD-am, WINK-tv, WPEC-tv and WSLR-fm. His written work has appeared in The Sarasota Times and The Pelican Press. He was a columnist for Sarasota Magazine, and is the author of four non-fiction books. He was a correspondent for Sarasota.Patch. com and city editor for the Sarasota News, both professional on-line news publications. His career started in Sarasota in 1975. He has never worked for the Sarasota Herald Tribune, or had any desire to do so.

He is a graduate of Northern Illinois University, and has a Master of Arts in Journalism from The American University in Washington, DC. He spent a decade in the middle of his career in Washington covering Congress, the Pentagon and the world’s navies as editor of the weekly Navy News.

Unlike most American reporters, Stan is heavily engaged in his community and profession. He was elected to the governing board of the Periodical Press Gallery of the U.S. Congress, and as chairman of the Maritime and Naval Correspondents Circle in Washington.

He was twice elected chairman of the Sarasota Coalition of City Neighborhood Associations, after reviving his Alta Vista Neighborhood Association from dormancy. He was elected to the board of directors of the Sarasota Sailing Squadron for six consecutive years. Last November he was appointed to fill a vacant seat on the Sarasota City Commission.

Stan is a veteran of the United States Army, a qualified paratrooper and jumpmaster who served in a special operations unit in Germany during the Cold War. Stan’s books include Submarine Design for the 21st Century, Submarine Technology for the 21st Century, Cruising (with) Class, and A History of Smuggling in Florida. He has spoken to historical and genealogical societies all over Florida, and teaches elements of Florida history at the Lifelong Learning Academy on the USF/Sarasota-Manatee campus.

He remains a recreational sailor, having sailed Florida’s long coastline for decades. He delivered papers at professional symposia in Stockholm, Annapolis and Washington. His heart and his home are in Sarasota. He has resided in the city’s Third District for the last 19 years.
