Sgt. Tom Shanafelt
Sgt Shanafelt was presented and honored before the City Commission on Tuesday, September 4, 2012
Sgt. Tom Shanafelt, SPD, is currently in charge of handling all pawns, second hand dealers, and scrap and burglary investigations. He has been instrumental in coordinating the “Finder” program for the Sarasota Police Department.
The “Finder” program consists of training participants in recognizing the difference between secondhand dealers, gold buyers and pawn shops and allowing these business owners to understand the victim’s rights pertaining to the recovery of stolen property. It helps victims recover property taken from them in the commission of crime. The person bringing the items in for pawning can be tracked, which in most cases, leads to charges against that individual who might be dealing in stolen property.
Sgt. Shanafelt oversaw this process and put together a presentation to coordinate with all 33 second hand dealers and get
them on board with this reporting system. He has also been the “go to” person for all their questions and computer problems. He works very hard on this project while still working on his regularly assigned investigations.
In addition, there have been many incidents that Sgt. Shanafelt has had to pursue. This past Memorial Day, a quadruple shooting occurred at a bar north of Myrtle, Sgt. Shanafelt and his team did an excellent job of handling the scene.
A City of Sarasota employee who takes ownership and responsibility in his work, Sgt. Shanafelt is to be commended for his hard work, job knowledge and dedication. He serves our community with excellence and pride. Congratulations!
