The City of Sarasota provides solid waste and recycling collection services within the city limits. Recycling is mandatory in the City of Sarasota for Residents and Businesses - view the ordinance here. Services include the following:  Collection of garbage, recyclable materials, yard waste, and special waste.  Please have your materials placed at the curbside by 7:00 am on your regularly scheduled collection day.  Once collected, please remove your containers by the end of your regularly scheduled collection day.

RECYCABLE MATERIALS can either go into the green or blue bin include: aluminum cans, foil, and food trays without residue; steel/tin cans; glass bottles and jars of all colors; metal jar lids; plastic containers typically marked on the bottom with a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7; Acceptable Recyclable Numbers  and poly-coated paper cartons (milk and juice cartons and boxes), newspapers, flattened cardboard, junk mail, magazines, telephone directories, white or colored paper, brown paper bags, cereal boxes, pizza boxes, and paper of just about any type that is not contaminated by food, metal, glue, etc.  This co-mingling process is our first step towards a single recycling container.  Stay tuned…

SPECIAL WASTES include: white goods (appliances), e-waste (end-of-life computers, monitors, printers, televisions, etc.), tires (up to 4 per pickup at a single address), used oil (up to 5 gallons per pickup, placed in clear plastic containers with screw-on lids), used oil filters (up to 5 filters per pickup, placed in clear zip-locked plastic bags), and bulky waste (furniture, etc.).

YARD WASTE includes:  grass clippings and all plant parts, including roots with no soil/dirt, annual flowers, typical weeds, perennials, shrubs, palms and trees.  However, the City will not accept tree or palm stumps, soil & dirt, rocks & boulders, plastic bags, concrete, asphalt, animal waste, painted and/or treated wood.  All yard waste must be placed within a 45-gallon container or smaller with handles.   You can also bundle and tie the material in 4 ft. lengths or smaller and no more than 50 lbs. in weight.  Please place the yard waste at least 5 feet away from the garbage container and recycling bins, mail boxes, street signs, electrical poles and fire hydrants.  For large yard waste piles, please call the City at 941-365-7651 to arrange a special pick-up that will include a minimum charge of $26.24.

In addition, the City will have a new contractor, Waste Pro (941) 355-9600, for collection of recyclable materials and special wastes. Garbage, recyclables, and yard waste will be collected on the same day of the week, although the day of collection will change for some residents. (See the map links above) Any special wastes (as defined above) that cannot be picked up on a regular collection route will be picked up within 48 hours after placement curbside.
